Sonic Range Finder from Matbotix. Very reliable and easy to use. The beam of this EV-1 is alittle wide, but they make other types that vary.

Output in 3 types. Analog Signal [variable voltage], Pulse Width, and Serial.
I found using the PulseIn or Serin2 to be most reliable and repeatable.
